The Great Bittern is a bird that most have heard, but only a few have seen, because it spends most of its life hidden in thick reeds, where it can call out for the whole night long. That is the reason why the Great Bittern has a lot of folk names like swamp-devil, night-scarer and lake-drinker. These are directly translated from Estonia. It’s English names are barrel-maker, bog-bull and boom.bird to name a few.
Only very rarely does this bird dare to come out to the open and let itself be seen. Why? Well, because the spring is cold and the hunger drives to search for food.
