The talons that are directly responsible for supplying the body with food and come to direct contact with alien bodies, need precise care. Usually self-preening takes place high in a tree, surrounded with protective branches. I was lucky that this Ural Owl decided to perch on a lower branch and nap for an hour, before showing me how it cares for the talons.
